Casey Calvary
Casey Wayne Calvary was born April 27, 1979, in Wuerzburg, Germany. He graduated from Bellarmine Prep High School in Tacoma, where he dominated the basketball courts. His senior season, Calvary averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds per game prior to breaking his ankle and missing the final weeks of the season.
Calvary attended Gonzaga University from 1997 to 2001, and he made his mark on the team from his first season. He led the West Coast Conference with 46 blocked shots during his freshman campaign, playing in all 34 games that year.
Calvary's scoring improved with each year on the team, from 3.7 as a freshman to 9.4 as a sophomore, 13.2 as a junior and 19.0 as a senior. For his career, he averaged 5.6 rebounds per game and an impressive .577 shooting percentage. As a 6-8 big man, Calvary had an incredible shooter's touch, compiling a .410 (82-of-200) shooting percentage from beyond the three-point arc in his career.
During the Bulldog's 1999 second round upset of Stanford in the NCAA tournament, Calvary scored the first eight Gonzaga points. Later in the tournament, his tip-in with 4.1 seconds left gave Gonzaga a 73-72 victory to propel the Bulldogs into the Elite Eight.
Named to the All-West Coast Conference first team during his junior year, Calvary helped lead Gonzaga back to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. He finished his Bulldog career strong in 2000-01, scoring in double digits for the first 24 games of the season, including a career-high 29 points against Washington. Calvary earned West Coast Conference Player of the Month honors for December and became the conference’s all-time leader in career blocked shots with 201.
Calvary was named the WCC Player of the Year, All-WCC first team and District 14 first team as he became the seventh-leading scorer in Gonzaga history, with 1,509 career points. Since graduating, Calvary has spent time playing basketball in Japan, France, Australia and Spain.
