Paul Hoseth

Starting in 1968 until his retirement in 2005, Paul Hoseth played a key role in the development and success of the Pacific Lutheran University athletic department. He served as head track coach from 1968-82, assistant football coach from 1968-95, and was Athletic Director and Dean of the School of Physical Education from 1996 until his retirement. His quiet demeanor and high ethical standard belied his fierce competitive nature.

In his track & field coaching career, Hoseth mentored five NAIA track & field All-Americans, including one national champion. He had a tremendous influence on the PLU football program, primarily as defensive coordinator. He coached 12 football NAIA All-Americans and helped lead PLU to three NAIA national championships and 13 conference crowns.

As Athletic Director, he led the transition in national affiliation from NAIA to NCAA Division III, organized efforts to coordinate fundraising with the Office of Development, which included starting the Lute Club Golf Tournament, and began the groundwork on the master plan for athletic, physical education and recreation facilities. He was named the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors West Region Athletic Director of the Year in 2000-01, and served on the NCAA's West Region and National Football Committee for five years.
