Wes Smylie was a state champion runner at Clover Park High School during the late 1960s and continued his exploits at the University of Oregon, where he was member of the team that tied for the NCAA championship in 1970 with Kansas and Brigham Young universities.
A three-year UO letterman, he was on the same teams as Oregon greats Steve Prefontaine, Bouncy Moore and Mac Wilkins -- the latter also a Clover Park grad. Oregon was the Pac-8 runner-up his first two years and finished third in 1972. Smylie participated in the 1971 Pre-Olympic Training Camp and qualified for Olympic Trials in 1972 and 1976. He competed with the Oregon Track Club from 1973-76 and coached track and cross country at Willamette High School in Eugene, OR from 1975-78.
During high school days, he participated in cross country and track. He was the state cross country individual champion in 1967 and the conference, district and state one-mile champion in 1968. Clover Park won the team state track and field championship in 1968. His track coach was Darold Talley, who also is being inducted in the Hall of Fame with the class of 2010.
Other career highlights: Washington State Federation one-mile champion in 1967 and 880-yard champion in 1968; Washington state representative to the 1968 Golden West Invitational and the 1967 and 1968 USTFF national competitions.
He was born in Tacoma Jan. 30, 1950 and graduated from Clover Park in 1968 and the University of Oregon in 1973.
Smylie resides in Redlands, CA and is employed as the senior vice president of a construction management firm.
