2020 Scott Names TAC Male Athlete of the Year

    Ryan Wheeler

The Tacoma News Tribune wrote, "Ryan Wheeler is the best wrestler west of the mountains, and they described Ryan and his teammate Maka Yacapin as "Untouchables." Ryan, a senior at Curtis High School, defeated the 1A, 2A, 3A state champions in his weight classes by pin or technical fall. He scored a 38-1 record this year, only losing to the fourth rated wrestler in the United States at a tournament in Las Vegas. He's ranked tenth nationally and number three in Greco-Roman Wrestling.

Coach Gaspaire said, "He has such fast feet that he doesn't have to utilize them." He's comfortable standing in front of you and making you have to defeat that strength. He's just gone because he is swift. His work ethic inspires everyone. It's nice when you're so talented that your other talents just kind of sit there. He's so strong. He knows where he wants to be. He stays tight, doesn't make errors."

As a freshman, Wheeler wrestled in the 113-pound weight class. After a growth spurt, he won the state championship as a junior in the 145-pound weight class. As a senior, he wrestled at 152 pounds. Ryan said, "I was always a smaller guy, so I can scramble and have that technique. I've gotten my strength up to where I don't wrestle anyone with greater power than me. That alone has given me a significant advantage."

Curtis Athletic Director wrote, "Ryan's family has been instrumental in building the success of the Curtis wrestling program for the last decade. Ryan will work with any kid in the room. His positive attitude and selflessness impact his teammates positively. Ryan was always willing to wrestle when he was sick or injured if the team needed it. He could have been too big for the program, but he always acted as if he was like everyone else. He was a joy to coach and watch perform."

The Tacoma Athletic Commission enthusiastically honors Ryan Wheeler of Curtis High School as the 2020 Scott Names Most Outstanding Male Athlete in the Tacoma and Pierce County area.
