Enclosed is an application for the Clay Huntington Sports Communication Scholarship that is available to seniors who will be graduating from a Pierce County High Schools in the Spring of 2021. Clay Huntington was a Tacoma sports broadcaster (high school, college, and professional sports) for more than 40 years. He was perhaps best known as the voice of the Tacoma Tigers of the Western International League from 1946-51.He also did the color commentary for the Tacoma Rockets hockey club in the late ’40s and early ’50s. Clay also was a sportswriter for the Tacoma Times. He was one of the founders of the Tacoma Athletic Commission and a two-time President.
The recipient receives a one-time $2500.00 scholarship from the Tacoma Athletic Commission. This scholarship will be paid directly to the finance office where the student matriculates to offset the cost of the student’s first year’s tuition.
Please make additional copies if need to reach faculty members and staff members who might be aware of a worthy candidate. Also, please send to school newspapers, yearbook staffs, broadcast and media advisors. Candidates should be involved in sports writing and/or sports casting while in high school and intend on following those interests in college and professionally.
