Henry Cheney
Charles Wright High School

The name Cheney is recognized throughout Pierce County whenever it comes time to talk local sports. The Cheney Studs have been a national power in Amateur baseball. Cheney Stadium is home to Pacific Coast League baseball. At Charles Wright Academy, however, the name Henry Cheney not only includes the thoughts of baseball but a generous helping of basketball and football as well. He’s a star in all three sports for the Tarriers, and he’s just been named the Clint Names Male Multi-Sports Excellence Award winner of a $5,000 college scholarship. The grand-son of the legendary Ben Cheney, Henry sparkled at first base with a .534 bat-ting average, 2 home runs, and 16 RBIs in baseball. In hoop season he was CW’s top rebounder and averaged 12.2 points and 8 rebounds per game. In the Fall he quarterbacked the Charles Wright football team with back-to-back seasons of 2311 yards and 21TDs and 1983 yards and 18 TDs. He was voted to all-league teams in all three sports, eight times in all, and led Charles Wright to state tournaments in all three sports. His was described by one of his coaches as “one of the most un-selfish players I have ever coached.” Outside of sports, he has served meals to the homeless at Urban Grace Church, led noon recess sports clinics for lower school students, has started a Fellowship of Christian Athletes club at Charles Wright, and was involved in the peer tutoring program there. He is headed for the University of Portland to play baseball and leaves behind this assess-ment from his Athletic Director at Charles Wright: “Henry is the total package. He is an individual
that you would want your son to grow up to be like.”
