    Daniel Shurr -

    Peninsula High School

Daniel wrote, "Growing up in the small town of Key Peninsula Washington, we are a very tightly knitted community. People know me around town for the announcing that I do for my High School, and they have supported me all the way. When I make it big, I do have aspirations to come back to my high school and help to breed the next generation of announcers by helping out with the radio class should the chance arise. I feel that helping to teach the next generation of radio and T.V. personalities would be giving more than simply writing a check to my Alma Mater's Radio station." Daniel Shurr, a senior at Peninsula High School, is the 2020 Clay Huntington Sports Communication Scholarship recipient. Daniel will attend Washington State University this Fall, majoring in Communications and minoring in Sports Journalism. He plans to become involved with clubs at WSU like "The Daily Evergreen" (Newspaper) and "Cable 8 Productions" (WSU T.V station).

Daniel has gained a healthy respect for sports journalists that provide the color commentary for the game. For the past five years, every Sunday the Seahawks played, his parents would turn off the volume and let their only son commentate the game. During his high school career, Daniel was the public address announcer for his high school sporting events, and for the past two years, "I have been given the title of "the voice of the Peninsula Seahawks. "My ultimate dream is to have a Primetime spot in the booth in front of the camera at NFL games."

Daniel's sports communication teacher, Leland Smith, writes, "Daniel has a special quality; he's a guy who loves to prepare for a sports production as much as he loves to show off his work." Furthermore, Smith said, "Daniel's commitment to preparation and attention to detail will take him a long way in sports management, broadcasting, or any endeavor he pursues."

Daniel represents the most exceptional qualities of Clay Huntington, one of the youngest sports journalists in Tacoma history whose knowledge, wisdom, and integrity spanned several generations of local sports fans. Smith sums Daniel up best by writing, "Daniel works well independently and is a good problem-solver. He has a good understanding of business concepts and current events, plus great respect for discipline and command. Equally important, he's never failed in sharing his knowledge and experience as a mentor with other students and staff members. He's not afraid to fail, learn from failure, and grow stronger in the process."

It is an honor to name Daniel Shurr as the 2020 Clay Huntington Sport Communication Scholarship recipient on behalf of all members of the Tacoma Athletic Commission.
