Dorien Simon
Lakes High School

Football, swimming & diving, track & field…you name it and the name of Dorien Simon will pop-up all over the place. He is the Clint Names Multi-Sport Excellence Award winner in all three, and the winner of its $5,000 scholarship.

Where to start is a challenge, and my how Dorien accepts a challenge? He has been a three-year starter at wide receiver for Lakes high in football and coach Dave Miller says that his speed made him a threat to go all the way on every play. He was 3rd in diving at the state swimming & diving championships and he was all over the championship lists at this year’s state Track & Field championships.

Listen to this: He won WIAA 3A state championships in the 100 meters, in the 200, and he was a member of the state championship 4X100 relay team. His times were 10.56 and 21.50 in the individual events and 41.68 in the relay.

He was an all-league performer in all three events and an important member of the championship relay teams at the Curtis Viking and Shoreline Invitationals. He also won the 100 at the Stanford Invitational Championships and was the winner in the 100, 200 and 4X100 relay at the 7th annual Add It Up Invite. Is it any wonder that he was named Pierce County League sprinter of the year?

How was he in the classroom? A 4.0 GPA says it all. A two-year member of the National Honor Society, Vice President of Social Media, a member of the Lakewood Youth Council and the Parks and Recreation Advisory, helping at School Carnivals, a Science Fair Judge, assisting at the MS Walk to raise money for the disease (260 hours),and selling “water drops” at school lunches to raise money for African kids were among his volunteer activities.

What did he do in his spare time? He is a Lifeguard at the Lakewood YMCA, he spent the entire summer as a Point Defiance Zoo Guide, and this summer he will have in internship at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Institute to learn more about biological research.

That “multi” title isn’t confined to sports. He’s on a fast track in every phase of his life.
