How about Wilson high’s 12-year varsity letter winner in soccer, wrestling and track & field? And that’s not all! Kathleen “Lena” Flanagan made history at Wilson as the only three-time four-year letter winner there…ever. It’s no wonder she has been named the TAC’s Clint Names Multi-Sport Excellence $5,000 winner for 2018.
Lena was state champion in wrestling at 155 pounds this year for the Rams with a career record in high school of 126-17. She was 37-1 this season with (get this) 36 pins! She also was a three-time captain in wrestling there.
Her honors are so many that it is difficult to list them in terms of importance. Perhaps her Freestyle National All American selection (twice) and Women’s Body Bar Nationals All-American (twice) and her 3-times World Finalist at the Reno Worlds are impressive enough. As a four-time state champion in Folk style, and a bronze medal in the 2017 Nationals, she furthered her winning career.
At the state level she has been champion of the WSWA Greco event, the WSWA Freestyle championships, the 2017 Freak Show Tournament, and the Yelm, Othello, and Columbia Cup tournaments. She won the outstanding wrestler award at the Columbia Cup.
Locally she has been Athlete of the Week and Athlete of the Year in the Pierce County League and Region two of the WIAA. Twice she was named to statewide All-Academic teams as well and she won the TAC Athlete of the Year award this year in wrestling.
Her GPA was 3.8.
Lena also honored wrestling this year by starting The Lena Flanagan Freestyle/Greco Annual Scholarship for athletes wishing to branch out but may not have the means to afford to participate and compete in the sport
When you see that flag with the number 12 on it, think about Lena Flanagan. A reminder, perhaps, of her dozen seasons of success at Wilson high.
