Ella Brubaker, a basketball, soccer, and track star at Curtis High School, shines in every aspect of her life. Suzanne Vick, Athletic Director at Curtis High School, wrote, "You won't find a better all-around student-athlete than Ella Brubaker. She has all of the intangibles--great attitude, strong work ethic, coachable, and she is all about TEAM." Unlike many of her contemporaries who specialize in a single sport, Ella enthusiastically and with great heart plays multiple sports competitions. She has earned ten varsity letters during her high school career and was a three-year starter in soccer and four-year starter in basketball. Her play on the court and field won her SPSL 4A League with all-league seven times.
As an accomplished athlete, she could have focused on her own ability and accomplishments, but she was the ultimate team player. Scorebook Live's named Ella during midseason as a Top 50 High School Girls' Basketball Players and ranked #37 by Prep Girls Hoops Washington (Class of 2020). Ella graduates as Curtis' all-time leading scorer with 1183 points, and she averaged 19.4 points and eight rebounds per game as a senior. What stands out beyond her play are her leadership skills. Ella has been a captain in both soccer and basketball for the last two years. She and her family often host team dinners at their house to build community within the program. Athletic Director Vick says, "Ella has been in the Leadership class at Curtis and been a member of National Honor Society. She is one of those students who befriends all groups of students in high school. Ella is friendly, engaging, and can positively influence others. As a result, she has made Curtis a better place for all students. Ella combines grace, raw athletic talent, a strong competitive spirit, and quick wit to find success both on and off the court.
As an outstanding student, Ella has a 3.9 GPA and has taken six Advanced Placement courses for the past two years. Her love of learning is ever present. She has a keen and analytical mind whose thirst for knowledge is insatiable. Ella is the ultimate team player who will gladly sacrifice individual accolades for team success. Ella combines grace, raw athletic talent, a healthy competitive spirit, and quick wit to find success both on and off the court."
It is with great honor that the Tacoma Athletic Commission recognizes Ella Brubaker as the Clint Names Multi-Sport Athlete of the Year for 2020 for the Tacoma and Pierce County area.
