Joe Tompkins
2014
Soccer

Joe Tompkins has become one of the most recognized soccer referees in the area over the past few years. In three years since moving up from a line referee to a head referee, Tompkins has advanced from a grade 8 official (over 8,000 in Washington) to a grade 6 referee (less than 200 statewide). To climb the soccer referee ladder, Joe has spent over 60 hours annually for the past three years acquiring additional classroom training, far exceeding the required eight hours of continuing education.
Within his past three years as a WOA official Tompkins has been selected by the Pierce County Soccer Referee Organization to represent the organization in the State Cup Finals three times. Tompkins, a 1990 Sumner High graduate, has also been chosen to represent the state of Washington with several regional assignments within the United States Soccer Federation (USSF). Since 2013, he has worked as a National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association referee.
He serves as the assignor and Director of Officials for Sumner Soccer Club. As a Board member for Sumner Soccer Club, he dedicates numerous hours mentoring, developing and assigning younger inexperienced referees to promote the game of soccer for his community.
