The Frosty Westering Coaching Excellence Award honors a coach who, akin to the former Pacific Lutheran University football head coach, has been highly successful in the win column but, more importantly, has demonstrated an extraordinary ability to develop character in young people.
Randy Davis of Puyallup’s Cascade Christian School definitely qualifies on both accounts.
Upon hearing of his selection for this award, Davis commented:
“As a Christian and a football coach, for me, Frosty Westering was a hero. I was fortunate to be able to hear him speak many times. Our football team, at Cascade Christian, attended PLU camps on several occasions. My Assistant Head Coach, Brian Flattum, played for and coached with Frosty. So, our coaching style and philosophy have been greatly influenced by him. We, as coaches, have such a great opportunity and a responsibility to prepare and influence young people for life. When taught correctly, I believe football is the greatest game and it can provide many teaching opportunities. We live in a competitive world, so we want to ‘Run the Race to Win’, but in an unselfish way. Our players are taught to become ‘Servant Warriors’ for their brothers on the team. By doing this, success usually follows. Our coaching staff’s motto is ‘Building Men for Others’. That is our goal every year.”
Davis has coached youth football in Puyallup for over 20 years. His 2014 Cascade Christian team became the 10th Pierce County school to finish an undefeated season since the WIAA began sanctioning multiple classification state playoffs in 1973.
The Cougars went 13-0. Their goal-line stand in overtime held for a 27-26 victory over Colville at the Tacoma Dome for the Class 1A title.
Davis became just the third local coach to lead two undefeated state champions. Cascade Christian was also perfect in 2010. The others are Steve Gervais (three times at Eatonville) and George Nordi (back-to-back 1979-80 at Mount Tahoma). He is one of four Pierce County coaches to win multiple state titles in the WIAA era. Bob Lucey of Curtis (four 4A titles) joins Davis, Gervais and Nordi in that group.
Davis, a 1969 Wilson High graduate, has been the head coach at Cascade Christian since 2004. He was offensive coordinator for three seasons before that. His head coaching record is 116 wins, 22 losses. The Cougars have made the playoffs 11 consecutive years.
In addition to the two state championships, Davis coached Cascade Christian to three second-place state finishes and two other trips to the semifinals.
Davis admits that football is a “tough taskmaster.” When not coaching, he spends as much time as possible with his wife Mary, their six children and eight grandchildren.
