Congratulations to Melina Nguyen for being selected as the female recipient of the Tom Names Inspirational Award. There is no mountain high enough to thwart the determination and competitiveness of Melina Nguyen. As a tennis player at Lincoln High School, she has shined on the court, in the classroom, and the community. Her coach writes, "Melina has had many obstacles in her life, such as no father figure or much support from her family. She started tennis later compared to many of her counterparts, but Melina found something where she excelled and worked tirelessly to become even better. Despite the obstacles, she has found success and become an integral member of the team! Melina advanced to the 3A state tennis singles tournament. Her coach said Melina is an outstanding tennis player and an even better person. She is a great leader on the team and always tries to encourage others. Despite not having the resources or avenues to tennis that others do, Nguyen has consistently shined in the sport. She has dedication and competitiveness that is second to none.

Melina is currently undefeated and won the 3A Pierce County League singles tennis championship in mid-May Heading into state Melina was undefeated at 19-0 and helped the Lincoln tennis team win its third consecutive league titles. She is also a two-time state athlete and 1-time state medalist in tennis despite having only played tennis competitively since her freshman year!

Melina is an inspiration to her teammates and fellow students. She is a natural leader, positive supporter of all the girls on the team, and she brings a daily toughness that inspires others to achieve at their highest levels. I have also seen her use her own money to help girls buy shoes on the team as well as assisting them with money to re-string their racquets. She works diligently to make sure everyone on the team has their needs met.

It is with great pride and honor that the Tacoma Athletic Commission names Melina Nguyen as the 2019 Tom Names Inspirational Athlete of the Year.
