2020 Tom Names Female Inspirational Award
    Sydney Evans - Girls' Soccer
    Puyallup High School
Sydney's coach wrote, "She is a ball seeking missile. She hunts the ball, pressures defenses, and finds a way to score. She has all the tools necessary for the position. She is athletic, fast, aggressive, can score with shots from a distance, volleys left and right-footed. Sydney can score with her head and generates assists for teammates. She was the leading goal scorer for her ECNL club team."

What makes Sydney inspirational was how she faced adversity! Many students would have been in despair and angry by what she encountered in her freshman year. Sydney changed schools because she was harassed and bullied. She had to move to a new high school and did not gain eligibility to play varsity soccer because of the transfer rule. While this was difficult for Sydney, she took it in stride and persevered. She played junior varsity soccer during her freshman year. Sydney never complained; she worked hard to improve her skills, but most importantly, she helped her less talented teammates become better soccer players. What makes this more remarkable is Sydney's mother was significantly ill, and she handled all of life's stresses with dignity and graciousness.

Chosen three times as an SPSL first-team forward and the player of the year for the league in 2019, Sydney has earned all of the accolades that her talent, hard work, and persistence allows. In 2019, she was named to the All-State Soccer team and was named SPSL Offensive Player of the Year. Sydney has been a critical component in three straight SPSL League Championships. She was the leading scorer for three consecutive years at Puyallup High School. Her coach wrote, "Sydney is sweet, kind, and positive with all student-athletes on the team." In many ways, she is like a maestro on the field. She led, directed, and encouraged her teammates while at the same time, she played at a high level and was always cognitive of what was happening around her. Her work on and off the field was truly inspirational.

Sydney's impact both on the field and in life has been remarkable. It is with great honor and pride that the Tacoma Athletic Commission announces Sydney Evans as the 2020 Tom Names Female Inspiration Award recipient for the Tacoma and Pierce County area.
